It has been over half a year ago since our Qyotta colleagues moved into our Berlin office – and now we can’t remember being in the office without them!

Qyotta GmbH is an innovative software development company that specializes in software development in Java and new web technologies. Needless to say, they are made up of super great developers, with whom we are working ever more closely with. (And we enter foosball battles together – but that’s another story.)

On that note, we thought we’d shine the employee spotlight this time on one of many brilliant software engineers of the Qyotta team, Frank Schmidt!

Frank struck an immediate chord with us, thanks to his outgoing personality and quick jokes. In our chat with him, we learn what his role entails, what he perceives as the challenges of the industry, and a little more about him as a person.

Meet Frank!

Hi Frank! Tell us, what do you do as a Software Engineer at Qyotta?

Together with everyone else on the team, I am responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the software platform for one of our biggest clients. Since the roles in the team aren’t clearly defined, everyone, including me, does everything that this involves. On a daily basis, I monitor the system, as well as design and implement new features. My work also involves project management tasks that often involves direct communication with the customers. All in all, there are always a lot of different things to do, so work here never gets boring.

You used to work at a kindergarten. What made you change your mind and go into software development?

I didn’t get a spot to study. Eventually, I decided to look elsewhere and this definitely hit the spot. I don’t regret my decision to study software engineering because I’m thoroughly enjoying what I’m doing right now. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to be working with children anymore. Should the opportunity to combine both my passions ever arise, I don’t think I would hesitate to take it.

What do you think are the biggest challenges for B2B tech industry?

I can think of at least one thing here. The tech industry has become good at collecting tons of data in a short amount of time – and it’s only getting more. One of the biggest challenges for the industry is therefore to sort out and use that data, and to act on it appropriately.

You’re one of few Berliners left living in Berlin. What is your favourite hidden spot in Berlin?

My favourite hidden spot is hidden for a reason. The not so hidden but some of my most beloved places include Volkspark Friedrichshain and Tempelhofer Feld for chilling in summer. I strongly recommend Shan Shan at Gleimstaße for authentic Chinese food, as well as the Prater Biergarten at Eberwalder Straße for some after work beers.

You love making jokes. Tell us your favourite one!

There are no specific favourite jokes in my arsenal since I believe that the best jokes are both situational and original. I do love word jokes a lot though. Here’s one for you: “I’m reading a book on anti-gravity, and it’s impossible to put down.” Come visit me for more…

What are your goals for the next years?

At work, I would like to work on more core development projects and collaborate more closely with my “new” colleagues in the Ingenious R&D team. On my personal note, I’d like to travel more since I didn’t have a lot of chances to do that in the past.

Thank you, Frank!
